Skinny Dip
Author: Carl Hiaasen
I discovered Carl Hiaasen a couple of years ago, and have been a devoted fan ever since. This one is his latest, and one of his best. He writes what I would call "comic/satiric crime" novels which are all set in Florida, where he lives and works as an award-winning newspaper journalist. His style is similar to Elmore Leonard, but even better. Hiaasen's books are the kind that are impossible to put down - endlessly inventive, laugh-out-loud funny, and always underpinned by a strong moral sensibility which can never quite believe that so many sleazeballs and lowlifes can exist in one state. However, there are always those who fight against the tide of human scum and resist the forces of ecological destruction, corruption in high places, and all of the usual human sins. His characters are all so well developed, and his dialogue is so sharp, hilarious and unpredictable that I usually finish a Hiaasen book in a couple of days. I haven't given any details about the story in "Skinny Dip" because it's too far-fetched and complicated to summarize. The main thing is, if you want fabulous entertainment with some substance, I can't recommend this novel (or any of his others) strongly enough!
