Community Picnic by the Lake

Community Picnic by the Lake

On our second night in Holman, we were all invited to a welcoming picnic at one of the two nearby freshwater lakes. There were many community members there, and we were treated to a feast of fresh BBQ char, char stew, musk-ox, fried bannock, and the usual hot dogs and hamburgers. Everything was delicious, especially the char. We were formally introduced and welcomed, with a local woman translating everything to and from Inuinnaqtun, which is the western Arctic version of Inuktitut (the Inuit language which is spoken in most of Nunavut).
