In a year chock full of unique and unprecedented happenings, this is right up there. I came home on Friday evening to find this giant hunk of frozen meat sitting on our front step. There was no note, so I had no idea who had brought it and why, until I saw that Katie & Lambert next door had also received a similar gift. Katie told me that most of the houses in town had been given a portion of caribou meat, all of which had been traded for musk-ox meat by the Hunters & Trappers Association (OHTC). Apparently, we traded 40 musk-ox for 40 caribou with the H & T Association in Kugluktuk, since they were short on musk-ox meat, and we here were short on caribou. Quite the operation! Anyway, I am very grateful for this unexpected gift, and I wish I had bought my own copy of that poster I saw in the school kitchen in Yellowknife, because I have no clue about what part of the caribou this is, or how one should prepare and cook it. I'm sure I won't have any trouble finding someone to help with those challenges, as well as someone to help eat all of it!
