This just in: We had our high school Graduation Ceremony and Feast at Helen Kalvak Elihakvik on Friday, May 25 at 6 pm. The theme for the evening was "Northern Lights." The night was a wonderful experience for all of us, and a perfect note on which to end my two years here in Ulukhaktok. As staff supervisor of the Grad Committee again this year, I didn't get much sleep during the week leading up to the Big Night, running mostly on a combination of adrenaline and pure panic, as were the 11 grads.
We had so many photos that I decided to create a separate Photo Gallery just for the Graduation, and here it is. This also means that I will be able to count the June Gallery (only 5 days of which will cover my last few days in the Arctic) as Photo Gallery #24, bringing me full circle to the end of two years. For all these reasons, this Graduation felt like a very significant and emotional milestone for me, as well as for my students. To all eleven of you, whom I've had the pleasure to teach and to get to know over the past two years: Congradulations, and good luck in whatever you choose to do in the future! Each of you is a unique and luminous northern light in your own right, and you are all capable of great things! I will miss each and every one of you guys and gals. You are the coolest grads north of 60!
