Elsie was originally just going to use one colour (black) and do an outline of an ulu, but decided to try the multi-coloured approach, and I am so glad she did! She used mylar sheets to cut out the stencils, and then did one colour at a time. I especially love the funky lettering she created, and the way she gave the ulu a sense of texture. One little technical problem: I can never wash this shirt, so I will wear it only once, and then likely will mount and frame it as the unique piece of northern art that it is. There may be a way to seal the paint so that it could be washable, but even so I think I would prefer to display it as an original work of Ulukhaktok art, and a lovely souvenir of my time up here and my unexpected once-in-a-lifetime adventure as a quiz-show ambassador for Helen Kalvak Elihakvik ("place of learning"), the community of Ulukhaktok, the Beaufort Delta region, and the NWT.
